Calling all artists!

Lisa Ambrose, Life Enrichment Director

During the month of May, Edenton will be featured on the Community Art gallery wall at the Delaplaine Arts Center in Downtown Frederick.

So, over the next two months, start working on your projects! Whatever your medium might be – watercolors, acrylics, charcoal sketches, photography, colored pencils or poetry – all are welcome.

No framed artwork, please. Your submission may be matted, but that is not a necessity. All artwork for display must be submitted to Lisa, or dropped off at the front desk of Manor House, by Wednesday, April 23 to be included. Let’s show everyone what talented residents we have on campus here at Edenton!

Ash Wednesday

Andy Wright, Life Enrichment Coordinator

Ash Wednesday signals the beginning of Lent. It’s a holy day of prayer and repentance. Christians mark the day with a smudge of ashes as a reminder that all are sinners; from dust we are created and to dust we return. The ashes used are often created by burning the palms saved from the previous year’s Palm Sunday service.

On Wednesday, March 5, Chaplain Keegan will visit all of Edenton’s buildings throughout the morning to distribute ashes to those who wish to participate and will be available at noon in the Chapel to give ashes for all independent residents who wish to join.

Senior couple smelling spices

Liz Lyles, Life Enrichment Coordinator

One of people’s favorite things to wear is fragrance. It makes you feel good, and you get to pick different scents according to your mood.

National Fragrance Day is a day we’ll celebrate by sampling different fragrances. Some like floral scents, some prefer fruity ones, and some like earthy scents. Join us at Blossom Place on Friday, March 21 as we test different perfume fragrances to see which is our favorite.

We’ll also take a look back at the history of perfume, which dates back thousands of years!

Saint Patrick’s Day Party

St. Patrick's Day

Lisa Ambrose, Life Enrichment Director

President’s Day is observed annually on the third Monday of February. But did you know that, although the holiday is most often referred to as Presidents Day, the observed federal holiday is officially called “Washington’s Birthday.” Neither Congress nor any President of the United States has ever made the name change to Presidents Day official.

The day originated as an observation of George Washington’s birthday and also, then, included Abraham Lincoln’s (which he shared with Valentine’s Day!).

No matter, the day encourages us to reflect on not just the first President but all of our Presidents throughout history.

On Monday, February 17 at 11 a.m., Fiddler’s Green residents will test their knowledge of our Presidents and we’ll learn some interesting facts about the leaders of our country.

Let the “Madness” begin!

Basketball ball on court floor

Susan Shanahan, Life Enrichment Coordinator

March Madness is the NCAA Division 1 men’s and women’s college basketball national championship tournaments. These tournaments have occured annually since 1939.

The March Madness games are some of the most watched events in all of sports. In fact, the tournament games are even more popular than NBA games.

The tournaments consist of 68 teams divided into four regions. The teams qualify for the tournament by winning their conference title or by being selected by NCAA’s selection committee.

The women’s championship game will be played on Sunday, April 6 in Tampa, Florida. With the men’s national championship game will be played on Tuesday, April 8 in San Antonio, Texas. Fun Fact: The song One Shining Moment is played after each tournament.

Join Garden House for our own March Madness fun and games on Saturday, March 8 at 3 p.m. Come out and cheer on your favorite college team!

Women In Aviation

Andy Wright, Life Enrichment Coordinator

What comes to mind when you hear the words, women in aviation?

Many immediately think of Amelia Earhart, the first woman to complete a solo transatlantic flight. Somehow, we’ve overlooked other firsts of women in flight. Ruth Elder, shortly before being upstaged by Earhart, had brief notoriety following her attempt to be the first passenger, with a male pilot, to cross the Atlantic. Harriet Quimby, in 1911, was the first American woman to become a
licensed pilot. How about, Bessie Coleman? She was the first African American and Native American woman pilot, and she was known for her daring stunts performed for audiences all across the US and Europe.

If any of these facts are interesting to you, join us at Orchard Terrace on Tuesday, March 11 at 1:30 p.m. for aviation trivia and to soar into a riveting documentary.
