Maryland Day
Susan Shanahan, Life Enrichment Coordinator
Maryland Day will be celebrated on Saturday, August 24, this year. Mary-land was founded in 1788 and named in honor of Queen Henrietta Maria of France. Maryland has a few nicknames which include: America in Min-iature, the Free State, and the Old Line State. Maryland’s capital is An-napolis; its largest city is Baltimore. Some fun facts about Maryland:
- Judges in Maryland wear red robes instead of the traditional black;
- The Ouija Board was invented in Baltimore in 1890;
- The first cathedral and the first dental school in the United States were both established in Maryland;
- Maryland produces the most blue crabs in the United States;
- Jousting is the official sport;
- The Black-eyed Susan is official state flower; and
- All lakes in the state are man-made by damming rivers. There are no natural lakes in Maryland.
Garden House will kick off our National Maryland Day celebration on Fri-day, August 23 at 10 a.m., by hosting a watercolor class. We will be paint-ing the official state flower…the Black-eyed Susan. Join us if you can!
Live Music in the Restaurant
Andy Wright, Life Enrichment Coordinator
Do you enjoy live music? If you do, come out and join us at the Garden of Eden restaurant on Saturday, August 10 at 1:30 p.m. for the musical stylings of The Force! The Force is an acoustic group that plays Ameri-cana roots music: blues, bluegrass, country, and a little R&B.
Tom Ericsson, resident June Ericsson’s son, is one of the musicians!He said that he’s appreciated all the wonderful care his mother had re-ceived over the years and wants to give back to the Edenton communi-ty. So he and his band are volunteering to perform and will be playing music that his mother has always enjoyed.
Come out for the show!

In 1972, as workers in Pottstown, PA, were digging foun-dations for a new development, they find a skeleton at the bottom of a well. This discovery opens up the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the di-lapidated neighbor-hood where immi-grant Jews and Afri-can Americans lived side by side.
Join us in the library at 3 p.m. on Thursday, August 22 for the discussion.
Welcome, neighbor, to Orchard Terrace!

We welcome Mrs. Gloria Jean “Jeanie” Poole who recently moved in to Room 707. Jeanie was born and raised right here in Frederick. She graduated from Frederick High School, then she started working as a receptionist at Airpax Corporation. Later, she worked as an ac-countant at a local bank and would spend her evenings gardening, making sauce, and canning the vegetables she grew.
Jeanie has two wonderful children and three grandchildren. She is very active, loves to walk and enjoys a good book. When you see Jeanie around be sure to make her feel welcomed.
Jeanie, we’re glad you’re here!
Puzzlers Meet Up!

On most days there’s a puzzle set up on one of the activity tables; our residents love working on puzzles together.
The New Veterans Coffee Hour
Lisa Ambrose, Life Enrichment Director
Veterans often enjoy meeting others who served their country from their community. They enjoy hearing stories and finding out when they served. We would like to offer an opportunity to veterans at Edenton to meet informally for an hour, get to know one another, and explore benefits through the Veterans Administration they may have earned.
Veterans, please join us on Tuesday morning, August 27 at 10 a.m. in the Community Room for our first monthly Veterans Coffee Hour.
Guest Leader for this first gathering will be Bob Lebron, the Veteran Liaison with Frederick Health. We hope to see you there!
National Lighthouse Day
Liz Lyles, Life Enrichment Coordinator
National Lighthouse Day is celebrated on August 7. It honors the his-tory and heritage of lighthouses in the United States. The day com-memorates the signing of the Lighthouse Act of 1789, establishing the lighthouse service and authorizing the construction of lighthouses, beacons, buoys, and public piers.
In 1989 President Ronald Reagan designated August 7 as National Lighthouse Day to mark the 200th anniversary of the Act’s signing and the commissioning of the first federal lighthouse.
At Blossom Place, we’re celebrating National Lighthouse Day. On Wednesday, August 7 at 10 a.m., we’ll take a look at lighthouses around the country and share some interesting facts. At 2:30 p.m., we’ll get crafty and create our own lighthouses. Join us for the fun.
Time for a dose of laughter
Lisa Ambrose, Life Enrichment Director
What do you call an angry carrot? A steamed veggie. And there you have it. The classic joke. An innocent setup that leads to a punchline. And, hopefully leads to some laughs and giggles.
There’s some truth to the old saying, “laughter is the best medicine.” Laughter is a natural painkiller. It releases endorphins, which are known as the “happy brain chemical.” Laughter strengthens your heart. Laughter boost your immunity and it helps to lower your blood pressure, too.
August 16 celebrates National Tell A Joke Day. What better day to share a joke, inspire a belly laugh, and do something that can make you feel better all the way around.
On Friday, August 16 at 3 p.m., Fiddler’s Green residents will be shar-ing their favorite jokes to see who can get the biggest laugh from the crowd. And here’s one to start us off…”What did the horse say after it tripped? Help! I’ve fallen and I can’t giddy up!!! “
Join us for a Black Cow!
Andy Wright, Life Enrichment Coordinator
This month, on Tuesday, August 6 at 1:30 p.m., come and cool off with us at Orchard Terrace for a delicious, icy treat that dates back to 1893…the Root Beer Float! It was first known as a Black Cow, invent-ed by Frank J. Wisner. It got its start in a mining camp in Colorado. Join us and enjoy a sip of history. See you there!
National Senior Citizens Day
Lisa Ambrose, Life Enrichment Director
Did you know that August 21 is celebrated as National Senior Citizens Day? National Senior Citizens Day is an opportunity for families, friends, and community to come together and acknowledge the valua-ble impact seniors make in our lives and as part of society. For all that our senior citizens have done and continue to do, they deserve a big, heartfelt thanks.
Here at Edenton, we want to celebrate our seniors and give everyone a special treat. So, stop by the Garden of Eden restaurant’s patio on Wednesday, August 21 from 1:30 to 3 p.m., and enjoy an ice cream novelty treat—your choice of an ice cream sandwich, popsicle or king cone—as a way to celebrate and show our Edenton residents they are special and loved.
We hope to see you there! Plan to stop by and enjoy a cool treat on a hot summer day.

Resident Spotlight
Susan Shanahan, Life Enrichment Coordinator
This month’s spotlight shines on Mrs. Carole Krusinski who lives in Cottage 408.
Carol was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. She had one younger sister. After high school graduation, Carol worked as a hairdresser at a large salon in downtown Cleveland.
She met her husband, Joseph, at a church picnic as a teenager. He was born in Poland and was im-prisoned, along with his mother and siblings, in a labor camp in Germany during World War II. In 1949, when her husband was just 13, his reunited family arrived in the United States minus his half-brother who stayed behind.
Carol and Joseph married after dating for four years. The ulti-mately moved to Middletown, Md., and lived there for more than 40 years. They had two wonderful children, Kerry Lynne and Edward.
Carole is the proud grand-mother of three and great-grandmother of three. The newest great-grandchild just arrived on July 1. I’m sure if you ask Carol she’d be glad to share a few photos.
In 1995, Carol and Joseph traveled to Poland for a very special trip. They were able to locate and reunite with Henry, her husband’s sibling. This was such a memorable trip because they got to visit Joseph’s family.
Carol and Joseph moved to Edenton together: Carol to independent living and Joseph to as-sisted living. Sadly Joseph passed a few years ago on September 11, 2021.
Carol enjoys many activities here at Edenton and is a member of the Lifetime Singers choral group. She also enjoys writing poetry. We are glad Carol is a part of our Edenton family!
Our Sincere Condolences
All of us at Edenton extend our heartfelt sympathy
to the family and friends of those in our community
who recently passed away.
You will be missed.
