Here at Edenton, we partner with the skilled physical and occupational therapists from Bayada Home Healthcare, who help our residents stay steady, strong, and keep doing the things they love.

Our Edenton team and Bayada therapist Joanna work together to identify home and room safety concerns. That might mean removing loose rugs, clearing walkways wide enough for mobility devices, adding grab bars, adjusting furniture placement, or improving lighting, especially in the evening hours.

For those using walkers or wheelchairs, proper fit, regular maintenance, and safe transfer techniques are just as important in preventing falls.

Our team is here to provide guidance and support every step or roll of the way.

Kevin asks: “So Joanna, what is one area that you specifically focus on when trying to help people prevent falls? “

Joanna replies: “So footwear is something I look at that people don’t always think about. Footwear is really important to make sure you have the proper stability for your feet, for your whole legs, because that is the base. That’s where our balance comes from. So I look at making sure there’s a full shoe, that there’s a heel, that the toes are covered, no flip flops, I’m sorry, no flip flops, sandals, or barefoot.

Those all are increased fall risks, especially when you’re doing stairs or grass. You just want as much support on the base of your foot as possible to prevent tripping or your toes dragging, things like that.”

Whether living independently, in assisted living, or using a walker or wheelchair, moving safely is essential.

Activities like walking, seated exercises, tai-chi, or light strength training can improve balance, flexibility, and muscle strength. all key factors in fall preventions and safe mobility.
