The Kentucky Derby
Lisa Ambrose, Life Enrichment Director
The Kentucky Derby is a stakes horse race which is run at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The first race happened in 1875. This
year’s derby is being run on Saturday, May 3. It’s the first race of the triple crown series and it’s considered one of America’s greatest races.
Since we can’t travel to the Kentucky Derby, we will bring a touch of it to us. On Saturday, May 3 at 1:30 p.m., Fiddler’s Green residents will participate in their own horse race. They will be wearing their derbies and stylish hats while sipping mint juleps and nibbling on ladyfingers. May the best horse win!

National Frog Jumping Day
Liz Lyles, Life Enrichment Coordinator
National Frog Jumping Day is May 13. In 1865, Mark Twain published his first short story, “Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog.”
The current frog jumping record was set in 1986 by Rosie the Ribeter who jumped 21 feet, 5 and 3/4 inches.
To celebrate this day, Blossom Place residents will hold a frog jumping contest to see which of our frogs can jump the farthest.
Please join us at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 13 for a ribbiting good time.

National Hummus Day
Susan Shanahan, Life Enrichment Coordinator
The first National Hummus Day was in 2012, and our taste buds have been celebrating ever since. Garden House residents will be celebrating National Hummus Day on Tuesday, May 13. We will have a few different varieties of hummus to try during a tasting at 2 p.m.
Hummus has been around for a long, long time. The first real mention of hummus in a cookbook was found in 13th century Cairo, where it is just a cold chickpea puree.
Hummus is based on a recipe that includes chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice, then add in flavors like roasted red peppers, jalapeño, avocado, black olives or chocolate. These are just a few of the many ingredients people like to add to flavor hummus. Hummus can be spread on crackers, eaten on salads, bread, or used as a dip for vegetables.
There is no right or wrong way to enjoy this delicious, healthy treat!
If you would like to join us for the hummus tasting, please stop by Garden House on May 13. We welcome all!
National Rescue Dog Day
Susan Shanahan, Life Enrichment Coordinator
National Rescue Dog Day is celebrated annually on May 20 to raise awareness about dogs in shelters and encourage adoption.
By adopting a Rescue Dog, you receive unconditional love and companionship. Adoption saves a dog’s life and makes room for other surrendered or abandoned dogs.
The ASPCA estimates that approximately 3.1 million dogs are surrendered to shelters every year. Unfortunately, nearly 400,000 dogs are euthanized annually in the U.S. due to overcrowding, limited budgets and lack of interest from prospective families.
You can celebrate National Rescue Dog Day by adopting, fostering, volunteering or donating to animal rescues.
Mother Goose Day
Susan Shanahan, Life Enrichment Coordinator
Mother Goose Day is celebrated on May 1. It honors the fictional author of English nursery rhymes and French fairy tales. Mother Goose stories encourage creativity in children and adults and have captivated generations.
Historians have debated the true identity of Mother Goose with some believing she dates back before the 10th century. Legend says King Robert II’s wife enchanted children with exaggerated stories.
Blossom Place will celebrate Mother Goose Day on Thursday, May 1 at 10 a.m. We will read some of our favorite Mother Goose nursery rhymes and create a craft project celebrating one of her many beloved characters.
Pencil Art!
Residents work on sketches that will be a part of the Delaplaine Arts Center display in May.

Resident Spotlight
Lisa Ambrose, Life Enrichment Director
This month’s resident spotlight shines on Orchard Terrace resident, Mr. Paul Orrison!
Paul was born in Middletown, Maryland, but grew up and attended school in Brunswick.
An all sports fanatic, Paul was involved in everything from basketball to baseball to soccer, and spent his extra hours
working part-time on the railroad as a fireman.
Soon after high school graduation, Paul married his late wife, June, and they enjoyed 64 years together. He met June
one day on the Potomac River, ice skating.
He later enlisted in the Air Force and stated he chose the Air Force specifically because, “they were least likely to be shot at.” Paul served during the Korean War and, around the same time, was also studying at Bliss Electric School. Mr. Orrison enjoyed traveling a bit after getting out of the service. He eventually settled back in Brunswick. He and June had three sons, and he worked for the Federal Aviation Administration as an electronic technician to repair the radar equipment.
Paul also enjoyed coaching Brunswick little league teams in his young adult years and was the manager for the first two state champion teams in Brunswick, both of which his sons were involved.
He loved spending time golfing and shooting pool with his sons and, in fact, played in the Maryland pool leagues until just recently.
Paul has been retired since 1993, has five grandkids, and 11 great grandkids.
We are so glad to have Paul as a part of our Edenton community!
Bayada presents…
“Dietary Supplements”
Michele Price, RN, Director of HomeCare
This month’s focus is on dietary supplements. Here are a few things you should know about them
to use them safely:
Supplements are not considered drugs. So, they do not have to go through the FDA approval process.
• Supplements can cause negative side effects and interact with other prescription drugs you
are taking. It’s always best to consult your healthcare provider before taking any supplements.
• Supplements should not be used to replace a healthy lifestyle. Eating a well balanced diet and
engaging in regular exercise is still important.
• Even vitamins and minerals can be dangerous in high amounts. So, always take supplements
as recommended.
Join us on Tuesday, May 6, in the Community Room, for this month’s presentation.
