The Great Frederick Fair
Lisa Ambrose, Life Enrichment Director
It’s that time of year again! Time to get excited for the annual Great Frederick Fair.
There is so much to see…like livestock exhibits, lawn and garden, household displays, arts and crafts and quilts galore.
If you want to relive your youth, there will be plenty of games to play on the Midway. And you can’t forget all the delicious smells of “fair food” — like corn dogs, pit beef, funnel cakes, Italian sausages, and country ham. And don’t forget to bring home some sweet treats. We will certainly find candy apples, fudge and apple dumplings.
Edenton will be off and running to The Great Frederick Fair on Tuesday, September 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It’s $8 for transportation, which includes your entrance to the fair. Sign up early to reserve your spot on the van. A great way to end a great summer.

Her family then moved to Prince George’s County, Maryland. She attended the University of Maryland for two years. Then she went to work for the Federal Government as a Visual Information Specialist. For the last 10 years of her career she was a Web Designer and Administrator.
She has one son and two grandchildren. She enjoys painting and spent a lot of her vacations at Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina. She also traveled throughout the U.S. for her job quite often. Her favorite place that she visited was San Francisco.
We are glad welcome you back home to Edenton, Pat!Monday, September 23 at 3 p.m. in front of Manor House, Edenton is hosting a campus walk to raise money, show our support and spread awareness in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. Make an impact by donating and by joining us on Sept. 23 as we walk to end Alzheimer’s.
Here’s how to donate: visit the Alzheimer’s Association website at act.alz.org and search for “Edenton Frederick” to donate to our team. You can also donate by contacting the Life Enrichment Coordinator in your building, or stop by the Manor House and drop off your donation.

Teddy Bear Tea Party
Susan Shanahan, Life Enrichment Coordinator
The Teddy Bear is celebrated every year on September 9.
This date can be traced back to 1902, when President Theodore Roosevelt refused to shoot a black bear during a hunting trip in Mississippi. News of Roosevelt’s kindness quickly spread across the country. A Brooklyn candy store owner created a stuffed bear in Roosevelt’s honor and named it Teddy’s Bear.
Garden House will celebrate Teddy’s Bear on Saturday, September 7, at 1:30 p.m. with a teddy bear craft and an (iced) tea party. If you are in the area, stop in for some fun. And, don’t forget to bring your own teddy bear with you!
It’s Back to School
Liz Lyles, Life Enrichment Coordinator
It’s back to school time. Children everywhere are excited to start a new school year and see all their friends. Time for new backpacks, fresh school supplies, new clothes and shoes.
We started thinking back to our school days and how much we looked forward to a new year. One of the exciting things about a new school year is getting class photos taken. So, on September 12 at 2 p.m., in celebration of the new school year, Blossom Place residents will have a back to school photo shoot. Say cheese!

Did you know that August 21 is celebrated as National Senior Citizens Day? National Senior Citizens Day is an opportunity for families, friends, and community to come together and acknowledge the valua-ble impact seniors make in our lives and as part of society. For all that our senior citizens have done and continue to do, they deserve a big, heartfelt thanks.
Here at Edenton, we want to celebrate our seniors and give everyone a special treat. So, stop by the Garden of Eden restaurant’s patio on Wednesday, August 21 from 1:30 to 3 p.m., and enjoy an ice cream novelty treat—your choice of an ice cream sandwich, popsicle or king cone—as a way to celebrate and show our Edenton residents they are special and loved.
We hope to see you there! Plan to stop by and enjoy a cool treat on a hot summer day.

Resident Spotlight
Andy Wright, Life Enrichment Coordinator
This month’s spotlight shines on Mrs. Hazel Smith. Hazel was born in South Carolina and raised in Basset, Virginia. After graduating high school, she took a government job in Washington, D.C. This is where she met her late husband, William. She then followed him in his Marine work where she found her true and most treasured calling; caring for and engaging young children at Camp Lejeune’s Paradise Point childcare center. There, she had many jobs: bookkeeper, caregiver, hiring manager, and treasurer. Not only did Hazel adore and nurture the kids, they adored her as well. She was well respected and loved by all.
She had a way of helping those kids feel at home, especially when their fathers were stationed far away and deployed for long periods of time. Hazel recalls once saying, “When I walk into a room full of children and five of them throw themselves around my legs and say ‘I love you’… I just don’t know where else I could find that much joy.”
Later, after 40 years with the organization, she was named director of the Officers’ Wives Club organization at Camp Lejeune. She really enjoyed spending her free time at what she called “sitter service,” and her favorite thing to do was to take care of others.
Hazel and William raised two sons, and now she enjoys her two wonderful grandkids. In her free time at Edenton she likes attending Sunday church services and singing with Edenton’s Life-Time Singers Choir.
We are so lucky and grateful to have Hazel as a part of our
Edenton community!
Our Sincere Condolences
All of us at Edenton extend our heartfelt sympathy
to the family and friends of those in our community
who recently passed away.
You will be missed.
