February is American Heart Month

Lisa Ambrose, Life Enrichment Director

February is American Heart Month. On Friday, February 14, at 10:30 a.m. join Amy Burrier and Katy Smith from Frederick Health Hospital who will be here to enlighten us about our hearts.

Their topic for the day will be “Heart Health.” The discussion will include heart disease risk factors, signs and symptoms of heart attack/stroke, and treatment options. In addition, they will speak about preventing heart disease – more of a wellness approach and they will also share information about the cardiovascular services available at Frederick Health.

Mark your calendars and plan to attend this informative presentation. And, invite a friend or two to attend with you! What you learn might just help save a life one day.

Groundhog Day

Susan Shanahan, Life Enrichment Coordinator

If you’d like to know if we will have an early spring or continue with six more weeks of winter, keep your eye on the famous groundhog, Punxsutawney (pronounced Puncks-a-taw-ney) Phil.

On Sunday, February 2, 2025, crowds will gather at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to celebrate the groundhog’s 139th annual weather prediction. People come from all over to celebrate this tradition.

At sunrise, with help from his handlers, Punxsutawney Phil will emerge from his burrow. If Phil sees his shadow, it’s said there will be six more weeks of winter weather. An early spring is predicted if Phil doesn’t see his shadow. Punxsutawney Phil has accurately predicted an early spring 40% of the time.

Cities all over America celebrate Groundhog Day with their own groundhogs. Some of those include: Queen City Charlie in Cumberland, MD; Dunkirk Dave in Dunkirk, NY; Jimmy the Groundhog in Sun Prairie, WI; and General Beauregard Lee in Jackson, GA.

Keep your eye on the news to find out Phil’s weather prediction!

A warm welcome to Mrs. Diane Antonette who recently moved into Cottage 410. Diane was born in Queens, New York and raised with two brothers – one older and one younger. When she was 16 they

Andy Wright, Life Enrichment Coordinator

While we are leaving the advent season, it’s never too
late to make a wreath. Instead of symbolizing the start of advent—
peace, hope and joy—our Valentine’s wreaths will symbolize love.
Help us spread love at Orchard Terrace! We’ll come together on Tuesday, February 11 at 1:30 p.m. and put together our best heart-shaped wreaths. Any extra tokens of knowledge or fun facts about wreaths and Valentine’s Day are welcome!

National Wear Red Day

Lisa Ambrose, Life Enrichment Director

The first Friday in February is National Wear Red Day. What is it?

Well, on this day everyone wears red to raise awareness about heart disease and stroke. It’s an awareness day that focuses on saving women’s lives by encouraging them to take charge of their health.

Cardiovascular disease cause 1 in 3 deaths in women every year making it the number one health-related killer in women. The good news is that 87% of all heart issues are believed to be preventable.

So let’s turn Edenton campus RED on February 7. All residents and staff are encouraged to participate. Let’s show how much we care about each other.

Presidents Day

Lisa Ambrose, Life Enrichment Director

President’s Day is observed annually on the third Monday of February. But did you know that, although the holiday is most often referred to as Presidents Day, the observed
federal holiday is officially called “Washington’s Birthday.” Neither Congress nor any President of the United States has ever made the name change to Presidents Day official.

The day originated as an observation of George Washington’s birthday and also, then, included Abraham Lincoln’s (which he shared with Valentine’s Day!).

No matter, the day encourages us to reflect on not just the first President but all of our Presidents throughout history.

On Monday, February 17 at 11 a.m., Fiddler’s Green residents will test their knowledge of our Presidents and we’ll learn some interesting facts about the leaders of our country.

Follow the yellow brick road!

Resident Spotlight

Lisa Ambrose, Life Enrichment Director

This month’s spotlight shines on Blossom Place resident Julia “Jeanne” Culler Biser. Jeanne was born on Saint Patrick’s Day
on a small Frederick County farm in nearby Feagaville.

Jeanne was the oldest of six siblings. She graduated from Frederick High School and then attended secretarial school in Hagerstown. She met and married Dick Biser and they had one daughter. She is now the proud grandmother to her very special granddaughter!

Prior to retiring, Jeanne worked for the Frederick County Public School System for 35 years as a school secretary, a teacher’s aide, and in the food service program at the Central Office.

Jeanne loves to read, enjoys spending time in nature, sharing jokes to make people laugh (she has a great sense of humor!), and working crossword puzzles.

We are so glad to count Jeanne as part of our Edenton family.
